Do you need a funnel builder? A free stack that does the job

In short: A funnel needs five functions: a page, a form, a place to store leads, a follow-up and measurement. Free tiers of mainstream tools cover all five. Pay for an all-in-one builder only when its time saving is worth more than the lock-in, usually once the funnel already converts.

There’s no shortage of “free funnel builder, limited-time offer” pitches. Most are trials that turn into a monthly bill and lock your pages, forms and contacts inside one tool.

Before choosing a builder, list what a funnel actually needs to do. There are five jobs.

The five jobs of a funnel

Job What it does Free or near-free option
Page Explains the offer and asks for one action A static site (Astro, or a website builder’s free tier)
Form Captures name and email, maybe a qualifying question Your site’s form, or Tally / Google Forms
Storage Keeps every lead with its source HubSpot free CRM, or a spreadsheet to start
Follow-up Replies fast and nurtures An email tool’s free tier, plus an instant alert to you
Measurement Tells you which source brings customers Google Analytics 4 + Google Tag Manager (free)

Glue them together with an automation tool (n8n can be self-hosted for the price of a small server; Zapier and Make have free tiers) and you have a funnel that belongs to you.

The minimal version I’d ship first

  1. One landing page, one offer, one form.
  2. The form posts to an automation that writes the lead in the CRM, tags its source and sends you an alert within seconds.
  3. An automatic email delivers what you promised (a resource, a booking link).
  4. GA4 records the form submission as a key event, with the traffic source.

That is enough to measure Attract, Capture and the first step of Convert. Most funnels I review are missing step 2 or step 4.

When an all-in-one builder is worth paying for

  • You need to ship many pages and variations quickly and nobody on the team builds pages.
  • Checkout, upsells and course hosting in one place save you more hours than they cost.
  • The funnel already converts and you want to scale it, not discover it.

Even then, keep two things outside the builder: your contact list (export it regularly or sync it to your CRM) and your measurement (GA4 and your ad platforms). Those are the assets you don’t want to lose if you switch tools.

The trap to avoid

Choosing tools before drawing the funnel. Draw the stages, put numbers on them, and the tool choice becomes obvious. The 4-stage template is a good place to start.

Build the whole system, not one piece

The Growth Funnel System walks you through the full funnel, from tracking to automation. Founding seats open to the waiting list first.

No spam. One email when Founding seats open, then the course updates.
